MARIA’S MUSINGS - March 2006

Well, I thought it was time I started to put a little diary of events together. To say things have been hectic lately is an understatement. March has come and gone as quick as the proverbial Hare! We have recently been taken on by Raucous Records who will soon be releasing our second CD, and repackaging and re-releasing the first. Our new album was recorded by The Millionaires guitarist Zac at our good friend Lyndon’s house in Shrewsbury. A sprawling Mansion with beautiful river views, the feel of the place put us all in a good mood to record, and as we watched the snow painting the scenery white, we recorded nearly everything in one day. We are just waiting for the artwork and design and hey presto – at last, our next CD some four years after the first – boy did we make that one last! Really pleased with the new one – I’ll keep you posted on developments.

Immediately after recording we set off for five days and two gigs in Spain. Two fantastic venues – Gruta 77 in Madrid, and The Nashville Country Club in Terrassa, just outside Barcelona. Some of the pictures from these gigs are now on our website. Gruta 77 was more like a rock venue, basic, painted black, and with the crowd pressed against the stage. Usually we are playing to huge dancefloors and don’t tend to get so close to people. The venue was packed and very intimate. Any nervousness soon evaporated when a huge cheer went up as we took the stage. The crowd were soooo enthusiastic and friendly and sang along as we tore the place up. A wild night that I will never forget ! I love the continental crowds, they were as wild when we played in Heidelberg and Cologne, they really know how to party. The Nashville Country Club was amazing – a little piece of Nashville recreated in log cabin form just off a main street in Terrassa, complete with authentic scaffold sign. One of the friendliest places we have ever been to run by a very nice man by the name of Tony Parera. Also a fantastic gig that we thoroughly enjoyed.

Two days later, without our feet touching the floor, Rick and I we were off to The Rockabilly Rave in the Pontin’s camp at Camber Sands with a large group of friends for another 5 days of late nights, great music and lots of beer. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!! We have discussed the possibility of getting a four piece rockabilly band together – this was the best weekender we had ever been to, and has inspired us to look into this, so watch this space.

March finished with a gig at our local music venue in Shrewsbury called Owens Brasserie, and the Mayor’s Ball at Montgomery Town Hall – what a blast, a sea of dinner jackets and ball gowns filled the dance floor and a beautiful slap up meal to keep us going – marvelous !! That’s all for now folks, catch you soon.
